The Jewish history in Brazil dates back to the time of the voyages of Columbus, Gaspar da Gama, a Jew by birth, accompanied Portuguese admiral Pedro Alvares Cabral when he landed in what is now Brazil in 1500, beginning a more than 500-year presence in the New World.
The tour begins with a visit to the first Synagogue in Rio de Janeiro, authorized by Emperor Pedro II. Expelled in 1492, from Morocco, a small portion of them arrived in Rio de Janeiro at the beginning of the 19th century and founded the Synagogue União Israelita Shel Guemilut Hassadim to preserve the tradition and customs brought by its ancestors from distant Morocco.
Then visit Itzhak Rabin Park, with privileged views over Botafogo beach and Sugar Loaf. Visit the Holocaust Memorial (opened only from Thursday till Sunday).
You will also see Chaim Weitzman Square, a public school named after Anne Frank. Then, you will head to the The Jewish Museum of Rio de Janeiro, founded in 1977 after the donation of a menorah (a seven-branched candelabrum and one of the main symbols of Judaism) is a dynamic cultural center, integrated into life in the city through activities structured towards the dual objective of preserving memory and promoting Jewish culture.
The Grand Temple of Israel, is the Jewish Community of Rio de Janeiro’s largest monument and a part of the history of the Yishuv and the city. In the past, it served as a point of reference for Jews in Rio de Janeiro. In Copacabana, you can see the “Clube Israelita Brasileiro” and Beth El Synagogue (external).
