Description

What to expect: In the Rio’s Markets tour you will visit Farmer, Handicraft & Northeastern Traditions Market. Farmers markets are set up by the vendors on or along city side streets, a long line of individual stalls and offer a stunning variety of exotic tropical fruits and vegetables. Will be a great experience to have the flavor and juiciness of the fruit as strawberries, melons, and mangoes are simply amazing. Tapioca is made from hydrated aipim (manioc) flour that is sifted onto a hot frying pan which congeals the flour back together forming a ‘Brazilian like pancake’.A pastel is a fried pocket of filo dough stuffed with either minced meat, sun-dried beef, shredded chicken, shrimp with catupiry (creamy cheese), or hearts of palm. The good ones are fried to order and come alongside a cold green sugar cane juice that is pressed fresh every few minutes.

Enjoy this opportunity to walk through the fruit, vegetable and fish farmer market where you will see and taste some typical Brazilian fruits. You will also have a chance to see how fun and dynamic the sale of products are in such a place.

From there we will experience one of the largest handicrafts and art fairs in Rio de Janeiro, located in Ipanema, the Hippie Market. A group of hippies started a Sunday market in Ipanema in 1968 and the traditional fair continues with over 700 stalls set up at the Feira Hippie de Ipanema. This is a great place to find authentic Brazilian folk and contemporary art, jewelry, clothing and lots of food. Look, buy and always bargain the price. This is part of the culture at this fair. Pictures, bags, necklaces, clothes, slippers; there is a bit of everything in this market.

Then we will continue to the Northeastern Traditions Market, where you can dance to the sound of the “Forro”, is a style of popular music and dance that originated in the north-east of Brazil, but which is now popular all over the country. The instruments which feature in forró are the accordion, the bass drum and the triangle, and it is danced with a partner. There are a number of different styles of forró, such as the forró universitário, which combines various musical genres and has attracted a considerable following among the younger generation in Brazil’s cities. This group tour will take you to different parts of Rio de Janeiro city, giving you the experience of the diversities of this city and Farmer, Handicraft & Northeastern Traditions Market.
